The Workshop
The Hellenistic Workshops have a history that goes back more than 30 years: originally founded in 1992 at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands by Prof. Dr. Annette Harder, they soon became a highly regarded biennial academic conference series. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Klooster, the series has recently transitioned to the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität of Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, where it will hopefully continue to serve as a landmark for scholars of Hellenistic literature and culture.
The focus of the workshops shifts every two years, exploring specific poets, subgenres, or thematic lenses. Recent topics have included 'Women and Power in Hellenistic Poetry', 'Crisis and Resilience in Hellenistic Poetry', and 'Hellenistic Poetry beyond Alexandria'.
The workshops are structured for maximum scholarly discussion: participants circulate draft papers in advance, allowing the actual conference time to be dedicated to intensive, focused discussion and rigorous critique. The proceedings of these biennial meetings are regularly published in the academic book series Hellenistica Groningana, published by Peeters Leuven.
